One of the first things visitors notice when they walk into Children’s House Montessori School is the absence of chaos. “There are children joyfully and peacefully learning, practicing, socializing and pondering all day long,” says head of school Denise Touma.
With part- and full-day programs designed for tots between the ages of 2 and 6, the school honors the educational philosophy of Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori. The approach emphasizes self-directed, noncompetitive activities that help children develop a strong self-image and the confidence to face challenges and change with optimism. “We are committed to teaching children how to be peaceful,” Touma adds. Wee ones learn how to use their inside voices and their “indoor feet” (walking, not running) when they aren’t on the playground, how to share and how to be helpful and kind.
