Chandler’s Plumbing & Heating

When Jimmy Smith joined Chandler’s Plumbing in 1987, he learned an important lesson from the company’s original owner. John Chandler insisted that his team be available to customers whenever they needed them, even in the middle of the night. “He would say, ‘You advertised that you are a plumber, so be a plumber,’ ” Smith recalls.

An Arlington native and Yorktown High School graduate, Smith purchased the Falls Church-based company in 1999, and has carried on that “customers-first” tradition, even as he has grown the business from just two or three employees to the 30-strong team he manages today. In addition to plumbing services, the company also has air-conditioning and drywall/renovation divisions.

Smith says he works hard to ensure that his team stays abreast of new products and technologies, as faucets and fixtures become “smarter” and more complicated for homeowners to troubleshoot themselves. The company relies almost exclusively on word-of-mouth referrals and online review sites. “We have zero advertising budget,” he says. “We just concentrate on integrity and customer service.” –K.O.
