Michael Winn follows one rule of thumb every time he inspects a job site for a project that’s under way. He asks himself, “Would my wife be happy about this?” As the founder and principal of Winn Design + Build in Falls Church, Winn insists that his crew not only do top-quality work, but that they keep their construction sites clean and safe.
“We could have the finest craftsperson in the world,” he says, “but if it looks like a bomb went off, people are going to think we’re not doing a good job.”
Such attention to detail has served his business well for the past 17 years. Winn refers to the firm—a full-service residential design-build company that includes architects, kitchen and bath designers, carpenters, landscape architects and project managers—as the “Goldilocks of local remodelers,” meaning not too big and not too small. “If people want to do an addition, we’re the perfect size for them,” Winn says.
It helps to have multiple disciplines working under one roof, he adds. “When you’re sitting within shouting distance of each other, there’s this collaborative atmosphere,” he says, “and that brings a lot of value to the client.” –K.O.
