Olympic swimmer Kate Ziegler is an alumn. So is Eric Metcalf, the former running back and wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns. But Bishop O’Connell receives high marks for much more than its athletic programs. Last year, one in 10 students was an AP Scholar, and the Catholic prep school sent its Class of 2017 off to college with a collective $21.3 million in scholarships and grants. O’Connell’s culture also places a high value on civic engagement and giving back. Its annual student-run dance marathon—a tradition spanning more than four decades—has raised a total of $4 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Last year, a canned-food drive yielded nearly 13,700 cans of donated soup for local families in need. Though 80 percent of its students are Catholic, the school welcomes students of all faiths.
