Cherrydale Hardware
Best Hardware Store
One only needs to look up—and down—to see Cherrydale Hardware’s history. Both the stamped-tin ceiling and the stone floor are original to the store, which opened in 1938. Aisles filled with hammers, bolts and cans of paint are still mainstays in this venerable shop, which shares its building with a still-active Masonic lodge that also dates back more than eight decades. For many who live in the neighborhood, the store isn’t merely a place to grab a few screws and two-by-fours; it’s an institution. One local resident has a house account that dates back to the 1960s. “I grew up in Cherrydale and walked to work from my parents’ house when I started there,” says Jacob Pruiksma. Over a decade later, he’s the store’s general manager.
