No one wants to go to the ER. “We understand…it’s a scary experience. We are here to help you on your worst day,” says Taryn Overman, senior director of emergency services at Virginia Hospital Center. That’s why the medical team is constantly seeking new ways to make those unplanned visits as efficient and smooth as possible, with shorter wait times and top-notch care. Under one protocol, heart-attack patients are now administered EKGs in the field—the results of which are transmitted to hospital physicians prior to the patient’s arrival, saving valuable minutes in potential life-or-death situations. The Emergency Department’s collaborative relationship with Arlington EMS is key, Overman says. “The way we communicate and interact with one another…[it’s] really critical to our success.”
