Overnight camp is a rite of passage for many kids. And what could be more fun than spending two weeks on the Chesapeake Bay learning to sail, going for motorboat rides, wakeboarding, waterskiing, horseback riding and practicing archery with friends? This YMCA camp in Kent County, Maryland, is all about experiences, but it also emphasizes honesty, caring, respect and responsibility, says Elizabeth Staib-King, the camp’s executive director, who first attended the camp the summer after fourth grade. Years later, she met her husband, Regan, while working as a counselor there. Today, they live on-site with their two children, ages 5 and 8. Campers are kept “busy, busy, busy,” Staib-King says, adding that she’s aware of the impact a quality staff has on youngsters, and she hires accordingly. “We are creating the next generation of leaders that we want to see in the world.”
