Why do you do what you do? What motivates and inspires you?
I’m passionate about helping my patients understand that a healthy mouth is part of a healthy body. As a team, we work with our patients on their journey toward optimum health and well-being. That journey begins with relationship building. Together with my team, we break down barriers and create custom plans that are tailored to each patient’s needs in a calm, caring and sensitive way. What are your top priorities? Having two daughters and an all-female team, I’m excited and hopeful that there has been a recent cultural shift in the empowerment of women. One of my top priorities is to help women live healthier lives overall. I’ve seen some of the struggles of my female patients and team members over the years. In addition to abuse, professional limitations and other personal challenges, their stories often involve putting others first. Most women are the caregivers in their families and many times their own health takes a backseat. I want my female patients to know how important it is for them to prioritize their own well-being and focus on taking care of themselves, too. What advice would you offer for women just starting out? In the mid-1980s, the percentage of women admitted to Georgetown Dental School went from 2% to 50% in a three-year period, but the ratio of male instructors remained the same. Culturally, it took about 10 years for the profession to adapt to these changes. So, to younger women in any field—don’t give up! Change takes time. Set goals when planning your career, but allow yourself the freedom to change direction and take advantage of all the choices that abound today.
