What brings you the most satisfaction in the work you do?
It’s a curious thing to explain how anyone can have job satisfaction in the environment of family law. After all, every day means you’re dealing with people with quite possibly the biggest problems they’ve faced before. They’re frightened. They’re unsure.
The job is to guide them through a foreign process that they don’t want to navigate alone, and despite these challenges, to be sure that they make it through in the best position possible, without emotions clouding their judgment. If you can take a tearful and scared person and help them understand that things really are going to be ok, that they have someone on their side to help them through the hardest parts, and if you can see that they made it, that’s rewarding.
What should a potential client know before working with you?
We strive from the outset to create a comfortable environment in which clients can freely and truthfully tell us about their case–the good and the bad. The good comes out easily. The bad is where the work is a bit trickier. The attorney-client relationship works most effectively when the client can share all the important details of the case, even when there are potential “skeletons in the closet.” Hiding things from your attorney is never a good idea and can lead to bad moments in settlement discussions–or in front of the judge. With full information, we can do our best to accentuate the positive and to deal with the negative.
