10 Kid-Friendly Wineries and Breweries in Northern Virginia

Can't get a baby-sitter? No worries. These vineyards cater to the under-21 set and have activities to keep them entertained.

Virginia is home to more than 300 wineries and another 300 breweries, many of which are family-owned and family-friendly. Those under 21 can enjoy lawn games, mini golf, fishing and events tailored to tots while adults sip wine slushies and award-winning blends.

Sip under the sun or stars at the brewery’s biergarten atop the Capital One Center. For adults, there are draft beers, including You Do Fine-Apple, a small-batch pilot brew, and hoppy, malty, wheat-y, and light and crisp options. Wine and signature cocktails, including the summer-perfect Frozen Rocket Pop Lemonade are also available. Youngsters can order eats off the kids menu, which has grilled cheese, a hot dog and a cheeseburger, or they can join adults in chowing down on a giant pretzel, nachos or a black bean burger. Bonus: Perch Putt mini golf course is right there, as is the Great Lawn, a public rooftop park. 1805 Capital One Drive, Tysons

The Zurschmeide family that owns this vineyard also oversees perennial kid favorite Great Country Farms. Tire them out there with pick-your-own fruit and veggies and time on the jump pads and play equipment. Or time your trip around one of Great Country’s many festivals: The Pickle Fest is coming July 5-6, Peach Fuzztival on July 19-20 and Summer of Sunflowers on July 26-Aug. 15. Then head to the vineyard, where kids can continue to play while the adults sip wines, including a seasonal strawberry wine slushy (get a non-alcoholic peach version, too), and nosh on cheese plates and pulled barbecue chicken sandwiches. 18755 Foggy Bottom Road, Bluemont

Let the kids run wild on the playground and swing set or engage in some friendly competition in the form of lawn games such as cornhole and Connect 4. The winery also is a Live-Action Role Playing (LARP) site, so don’t be surprised if you are tasting the Virginia Governor’s Cup gold-medal-winning 2021 Petit Manseng next to someone fully costumed in fantasy garb. Upcoming special events include the Metaphysical Market on June 29, 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and the Babies and Bacon Bash on Aug. 9, 5-8 p.m. 10753 Mountain Run Lake Road, Culpeper

Keswick Vineyards

Located along the Monticello Wine Trail—a group of 40 wineries near Charlottesville—Keswick Vineyards has been making award-winning wines for more than two decades. In 2022, it added a nine-hole, wine-themed mini golf course. On July Fourth, noon-4 p.m., check out the Reds, Whites & Bluegrass Celebration, featuring live bands, face painting and food vendors such as Cousins Maine Lobster and kid-approved Kona Ice. There’s also the café, which offers sandwiches, charcuterie and soups. Adults can cool off with a sweet—and very popular—wine slushie. 1575 Keswick Winery Drive, Keswick, Virginia

The Wine Reserve at Waterford

Pack a picnic or grab a bite from the onsite shop while you watch a movie outdoors Aug. 1, around 7:30 p.m. Food options include grilled cheese and apple sandwich boxes and made-to-order truffle popcorn. Adults can sample wine options with a Wine Lab Flight of six wines in test tubes for a self-guided tasting. The estate’s “First Harvest” Petit Manseng is a 2024 Governor’s Cup Gold Medal winner. 38516 Charles Town Pike, Waterford

Family-crafted wine doesn’t have to mean family-friendly winery, but this one on Short Hill Mountain in Loudoun County is—especially if you love fishing. Bring a pole for some catch-and-release fun at the property’s pond. Adults can indulge in reds and whites but also dessert wines, such as Hope’s Legacy with raspberry, chocolate and oak flavors. On Friday and Saturday afternoons, live musicians provide a nice backdrop. 14727 Mountain Road, Hillsboro

Barrel Oak Winery & Brewery

Savor summer with weekday specials available now through August. Bring the kids any evening to enjoy a kid’s cheese pizza and frozen treat, while adults get their own pizza and two glasses of vino for $25. Beer lovers can expand their taste buds with brews such as the Barrel Aged Strawberry Saisoeno Crush Ale and Chocolate Lab Porter Ale. Designated driver? Try the summery Strawberry Rhubarb Hopped Refresher, a non-alcoholic drink with strawberry, rhubarb and hoppy flavors. Weekends, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., feature live music and food trucks. 3623 Grove Lane, Delaplane

Bear Chase Brewing Company

Look out at the Blue Ridge Mountains while listening to live music and knocking back award-winning beer. Prefer wine? There’s sparkling, white, red and icy wine slushies for hot summer days and nights. The food menu has wraps, burgers, flatbreads and specialty hot dogs topped with chili, cheese or brown mustard. Bring the kids for half-price burritos on Mondays or $4 tacos on Taco Tuesday. Monitor the calendar for family-friendly events such as Christmas in July coming up July 12. 33665 Bear Chase Lane, Bluemont

Creek’s Edge Winery

Fairfax County transplant Tedd Durden grows varietals such as Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. If you get hungry, the food menu features a mini Kobe meatloaf, lobster risotto cakes, flatbreads, and desserts. If you’re there for brunch (Sundays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.), get a Breakfast Board covered with cured meats, cheeses, fruit and breakfast pastries. The events listing shows live music this month, but check back for family fun. 41255 Annas Lane, Lovettsville

Paradise Springs Winery

Avoid “are we there yet” by going to this 36-acre Clifton winery—the first in Fairfax County. A hop, skip and a jump from Arlington, the property was part of a land grant from Lord Fairfax to the Kincheloe family, which has passed it down through generations ever since. Check out the original log cabin, which dates to 1800-1825—a protégé of architect Frank Lloyd Wright renovated it in 1955. Sip on chardonnay, Viognier, a sparkling Après Rosé, and others. Can’t decide? Sign up for a tasting. On Saturday afternoons, sip along to live music and check the calendar for other events. Kids must stay with their parents and away from production areas and the back patio deck. 13219 Yates Ford Road, Clifton
