“Dr. Watson is outstanding. He listened to my concerns, showed compassion and answered all my questions fully. He made me feel comfortable and well cared for.”

A neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at Georgetown University, Dr. Joseph Clark Watson leads the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Watson earned his Bachelor of Science at Stanford University and his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his neurosurgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia (now V.C.U.) in Richmond. Dr. Watson was fellowship trained at the National Institutes of Health in pituitary surgery and cerebrovascular research and surgery. He brings the wisdom of “those pioneers in neurosurgery from both coasts who instructed me” to bear on his patients.

Dr. Watson has been working on building a comprehensive brain tumor program where patients can see the doctors that they need efficiently and often in a single clinic, so that there is no delay in their treatment. With this comes state-of-the-art operating facilities and an intra-operative MRI. His closest collaborators in the fight against brain tumors are Dr. Komlodi-Pasztor at MedStar Georgetown and the excellent group at Virginia Cancer Specialists.

His practice in Tyson’s Corner also accommodates pituitary tumor patients (over 1,500 operations), brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and minimally invasive spine procedures. He has expertise in numerous challenging procedures, including anterior cervical disc replacement, Chiari decompression and microsurgery for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
