A typical dermatologist may see as many as 30 to 40 patients a day. That crunch wasn’t cutting it for Courtney Herbert who, after enjoying more time with her patients during spaced-out pandemic appointments, made the switch to a direct-pay model for her practice, FDL Dermatology, in late 2020. “I’ve just learned that time is so precious,” she says. These days, some appointments can last up to 90 minutes, particularly when folks coming in for annual skin checks also have other concerns. The office leaves room on the schedule for same-day appointments, and Herbert’s patients know how to contact her, even after hours. “They don’t have to talk to the on-call doctor, or AI, or someone offshore,” she says. “They can reach me. Anytime.” –Susan Anspach
